Raashan is an internationally recognized hip-hop artist, vocalist, producer, and cultural facilitator known for blending soulful lyricism, jazz-infused musicianship, and global musical influences. Rooted in classic hip-hop yet unconfined by genre, his work spans rap, spoken word, live instrumentation, and cross-cultural collaboration. Praised for emotional depth, dynamic performance, and community-driven creativity, Raashan continues to connect audiences across continents through art and storytelling.
Born in Trenton, New Jersey and raised between there and Pasadena/Altadena, California, Raashan grew up surrounded by music through his father, a DJ who played jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop. Dance culture and cyphers were his first artistic outlets before transitioning into rapping.
After moving to Boston, he co-founded the hip-hop collective Mission (later Crown City Rockers). Known for live instrumentation and conscious lyricism, the group gained critical attention with their album Earthtones.
Raashan debuted as a solo artist with The Push (2008), followed by For What You’ve Lost, Ceremony, and several international collaborations. He expanded his touring reach across the US, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America.
With his self-produced album The Sun (2019), Raashan embraced a globally influenced sound supported by collaborators from Senegal, France, Spain, Brazil, and the US. Now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he also leads cultural initiatives supporting artists and communities.
Raashan has collaborated with Chali 2na, Gift of Gab, Aloe Blacc, Keziah Jones, Fred Wesley, Keren Ann, and many others.
He has performed at international festivals and appeared with orchestras and symphonies in Colombia, Poland, and other regions, showcasing his versatility and global reach.
Raashan’s music collaborations span hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, Afrobeat, and world music. He has recorded with artists and bands in Dakar, Paris, Seattle, Barcelona, and New Mexico.
He leads workshops, youth programs, dance and DJ events, spoken-word sessions, and cultural activities supporting refugees, elders, LGBTQ+ groups, and underserved communities.
Raashan participates in documentaries, films, and multimedia art exploring themes of identity, resilience, and global Black culture.
Raashan transforms global travel into artistic dialogue—working with musicians, dancers, poets, and cultural workers across dozens of countries. His performances blend music, storytelling, and improvisation, creating immersive and heartfelt experiences.
